For Immediate Release

On Thursday, January 18, 2018, the Honorable R. Markley Dennis, Jr. sentenced Stanley Moultrie to 25 years in prison in Charleston County. Moultrie had been sentenced to Life Without Parole in Georgetown County for a related 2015 armed robbery. Assistant Solicitor Nina Savas prosecuted the Charleston County cases and recommended the 25-year active prison sentence to the court. Moultrie pled to two counts of Armed Robbery, two counts of Kidnapping, two charges of Possession of a Weapon During the Commission of a Violent Crime, and Assault and Battery Second Degree involving two robberies in Charleston County. Additionally, Moultrie pled to two counts of Armed Robbery and two counts of Kidnapping on Richland County charges. Savas stated, “We recommended the 25-year sentence in order to secure an ‘insurance policy’ for the Georgetown LWOP sentence. We also felt it was important to obtain convictions for each victim who has suffered because of Moultrie’s heinous crimes.”

In January 2015, Moultrie began an armed robbery spree that spanned the state. The first robbery was on January 14, 2015, when Moultrie went to the Spencer’s store at Northwoods Mall in North Charleston and held the female store clerk at knifepoint. He grabbed her and held a long serrated knife to her back. He demanded she empty the cash register and held her hostage in the back storage room to open the safe. He then forced the female victim to take off her top and grabbed at her chest and pants. Moultrie fled the scene after stealing the cash. The victim was able to positively identify the defendant.

On January 20, 2015, Moultrie robbed the Shoe Show in Georgetown, SC in a similar manner. Moultrie then traveled to Columbia, SC where he robbed the Zumiez store at the Columbiana Mall on January 22, 2015 and the Buckle store on January 27, 2015, again using a knife. Both store clerks in Columbia positively identified the defendant.

On January 30, 2015, Moultrie returned to Charleston where he robbed the Journeys Store located at the Citadel Mall. After pretending to shop for shoes, Moultrie brandished the same foot-long knife to the female store clerk and demanded money from the register. The defendant fled the scene with cash and a stolen shoe. The victim provided a detailed description of the defendant and surveillance videos captured the defendant in nearby stores.

A search warrant was executed at the defendant’s Georgetown residence. Clothing matching descriptions from the store clerks and the stolen shoe from Journeys were found at his house. In addition, cell phone data put the defendant’s phone at the Columbiana Mall during the Columbia incidents. In August 2016, Moultrie was tried and convicted of the Georgetown Armed Robbery and he was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

The victim from the Northwoods Mall Spencer’s store bravely addressed the court during sentencing. She explained how Moultrie traumatized her that day and how the robbery and kidnapping has continued to affect her life. She courageously attended every court hearing in Charleston and even the trial in Georgetown. Assistant Solicitor Savas stated, “Because of the strong victims, the joint effort of the Charleston Police Department, North Charleston Police Department, and law enforcement across the state, all of the victims can now take solace in the fact that Moultrie is serving life sentence as a result of his trial and that he faces 25 years if for some reason his trial were to be overturned on appeal.”
